Konqueror woes

with 3 comments

KDE’s file manager, Konqueror, was crashing every time I wanted to open a folder - i.e., the most annoying problem that I’ve ever had.

So I upgraded to KDE 3.5.3, and the problem was solved.

In other news, I’m moving tomorrow - the truck is loaded, the doors are closed, and there’s only the PC left to carry downstairs…

I should be back on the net Friday evening… but from the other side of France.

The Marquis de Saint Cyr (pronounced like ’sire’, or ’seer’) was hauled before a People’s Court during the French Revolution.

Juge: Citizen Prisoner, what is your name?

MdSC: I am the Marquis de Saint Cyr!

Juge: You insolent citizen! Don’t you know that all nobility has been supressed?! From now on, you are just De Saint Cyr!

MdSC: Very well, my name is De Saint Cyr!

Juge: Citizen! How dare you?! Have you not been told that the land of the ex-nobles has been confiscated? From now on, you will be known as Saint Cyr!

MdSC: If you say so. My name is Saint Cyr.

Juge: Merde alors! We have abolished Saints, you horrible little citizen, you! Call yourself Cyr, and be done with it.

MdSC: Sure. My name is Cyr.

Juge: Now just hang on a second. How dare you use the title of the ex-king, whose head was chopped off only last year! How could you be known by a title which no longer exists? From now on, you shall be known as…

Juge: Guards! Release this non-person! How can I condemn a man if I don’t know his name?!

And thus the Marquis de Saint Cyr avoided the Guillotine…

Juge means Judge; it’s not a spelling mistake…)

Howdy

with one comment

I’ve been away.
As you may have guessed.
I am now allowed to manage summer camps in France - or more exactly, French summer camps, in France or abroad. I am one of the 9 newest stagiaire BAFDs in France…

That’s a good thing, because guess what I’m doing for the next month or so?

In other news, my oldest pupils have sat their written exam. They came back full of exuberant self-confidence. One question: are they fools, or not?
The answer will be on July the 3rd.

One last thing. In case I hadn’t said, my job is now officially over. The school year has finished (and I’m not going back in September), and so, therefore, I am now seeking new (gainful) employment. Ideas?

Not T&T

***This is a security announcement***

Non World Cup followers should tune out now.

***End security announcement***

(Sorry about that - the GF doesn’t like football, and I do. Surprising…)

So T&T held the Swedes to a draw the other day, while England beat Paraguay. T&T deserve to be congratulated, while England does not. However, we did get three points, and I suppose that’s what really counts…

However, I’d like to point out that this blog is in no way affiliated to Trinidad and Tobago, and any resemblance between the T&T flag and my blog header is a complete coincidence.

Google Earth

First they brought out Picasa for Linux.
Now they’re giving out Google Earth 4 for Linux too.

Sweet.

Why bother with NFS?

with 2 comments

I wanted to share folders between my two kubuntu PCs. Obviously, to share files between two linux PCs, the way to go is NFS, right?

Wrong. Here’s a howto, to share anything between two KDE computers.
In Dapper, start by installing ssh (not installed by default…). sudo apt-get install ssh
Open Konqueror.
In the address bar, type fish://your_other_IP_address/ (for example, fish://192.168.0.2/
Enter your password.
Browse all the files of one computer from the other, over a secure connection.

I love kioslaves! They are KDE’s killer apps!

A real sentence?

with 2 comments

“This risk is exacerbated by the absence of Mr. Lanza’s presence.”

Reading this sentence, you’d never believe that it was written by an analyst from a major US bank, and published by a major US paper, would you?

Oscar Wilde said that the UK and the US were “two countries separated by a common language”. Apparently, that is even more true of bankers…
